Overview #
1. Objectives & Scope #
This short introduction shall guide the students through their theses works and help them in using the guidelines presented on this site.
2. How to Use these Guidelines #
It’s recommended to start with the general guides Formal Aspects and Scientific Works and then continue with the specific guide for the specific work Bachelor’s Thesis 1, Bachelor’s Thesis 2 or Master’s Thesis. Feel free to use a different approach, you mileage may vary.
2.1. Structure of the Thesis-specific Documents #
All documents in here adhere to a certain structure. Especially the works-related guides (i.e. those directly dealing with e.g. Master’s Thesis or Bachelor’s Thesis 1) all have this common structure:
2.1.1. Overview and Scope #
Short description of the (not) goals of the respective works as being an essential part of the study program. Also positions the works in an academic/Scientific context (i.e.“is this a scientific work?”).
2.1.2. Course of Actions #
Short guidance on the theses’ schedules. This includes preparation work as well as deadlines(!) etc.
2.1.3. Topics, Language, Structure, Volume #
Thesis-specific information which, due to differences between the different theses, was not included in the information about Formal Aspects and Scientific Works.
Caution:
The volume of the respective thesis will be given as an approximate number of words, an estimated corresponding number of (printed DIN A4) pages will be provided for convenience as well. If in doubt, the word count is deciding, as this avoids discussions concerning the amount and size of images etc.
2.1.4. Submission #
Rules for submitting the thesis correctly (e.g. printed or upload, etc.)
2.1.5. Grading #
Brief description of the grading principles in use
2.1.6. Non-disclosed Theses #
How to handle theses protected by a non-disclosure agreement
3. FAQ’s #
Note
FAQ’s will be updated and complemented as needed. Questions (and answers) will be added as they show up.
3.1. Is compliance to these guidelines 100% mandatory? #
In short: YES!
3.2. What, if questions remain? #
Ask your supervisor - he/she will be happy to support you and answer your questions
4. Finally #
A word of…
Caution:
These guidelines are Work in Progress! Please always refer to the latest published version. IAP will try their best to avoid breaking changes within the common periods of theses writing. In case of uncertainty please contact you supervisor, who’s happy to support you.
